Police are investigating whether a medical condition led to the crash that killed a pedestrian at Danforth and Coxwell avenues and an earlier fender-bender a few blocks away.
Police allege a westbound 2008 BMW rear-ended a Honda at Danforth and Woodmount avenues around 1:35 p.m. Monday. The BMW left the scene and approached a red light at Coxwell at a high speed. The BMW struck a stopped Chevrolet van and then a 51-year-old woman crossing Danforth.
The BMW hit a northbound dump truck before coming to a stop.
The pedestrian, identified as Joan Patricia Grys, was thrown across the intersection and was pronounced dead at the scene. She lived in the area and was walking home at the time, police said.
“Her husband Bill is devastated. He’s lost his beloved wife,” Sgt. Tim Burrows said. “The whole sequence of events leads to nothing short of an absolute tragedy. And that’s still understating the obvious.”
The BMW’s driver, a 60-year-old man, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“What we’re trying to look at is what was going through his mind at the time,” said Burrows, of the traffic services unit. “Maybe there was something medically there that we need to follow up on, and that’s why we asked the hospital to run some tests.”
It doesn’t appear that alcohol was a factor in the collisions, police said.
Burrows said no charges have been laid “because the investigation is still so open and we’re looking at so many different avenues.”
Police have spoken with many witnesses. Others with information are asked to call traffic services at 416-808-1900.
