Indoor soccer tournament raises funds for breast cancer

Event slated for Scarborough Soccer Centre

The third annual Kick 4 the Cure women's indoor soccer tournament is set for Saturday, April 26 at the Scarborough Soccer Centre.

This year's event is full with 16 teams competing to raise money for breast cancer research.

Last year's event raised more than $16,000.

"This year we're hoping to meet that if not exceed it," said Jace Prohaska, who organizes the event with Tiffany Woolford.

Prohaska runs the league at the centre and said she wanted to help the club's president Laura Cvik who was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago. A fundraiser was the answer.

"What better idea than to do a tournament that would benefit breast cancer and bring in some awareness and some funds to help our boss," she said.

Cvik's cancer has gone in remission.

The event raises money by charging an initial registration fee for the team. Also each player is asked to raise a minimum of $25 in pledges to participate.

Soccer fans are invited to watch the games that start at 9 a.m. with the championship game being played at 5 p.m. The centre is at 45 Fairfax Cres.

The centre is asking for a donation to breast cancer in lieu of admission.
