The YMCA is looking for peacemakers.
Peace starts with each one of us; it comes in many different forms and can connect us all, according to the YMCA of Greater Toronto, which is calling on ordinary people who do extraordinary things to bring peace to their communities.
If you know someone who is a peacemaker in your community, you can nominate them for the YMCA Peace Medallion.
Originating in 1987, the YMCA Peace Medallion is given by YMCAs across Canada each year during YMCA Peace Week to recognize the achievements of individuals or groups in local communities who - without any special resources - inspire and affect the lives of others.
The YMCA is seeking individuals who:
* Find peaceful solutions to violence, conflict, discrimination and injustice;
* Make a difference by working without any special recognition to create a culture of peace;
* Volunteer their time and work without any special resources;
* Enhance the lives of people in their community and around the world by creating a peaceful environment.
Nomination forms are available at www.ymcagta.org in the What's Happening section of the website.
Nominations are due by Friday, Oct. 17.
Awards presentations will be held across the GTA throughout YMCA Peace Week, which runs Nov. 15 to 22.
YMCA Peace Week is an annual event to celebrate and promote peace and peace building in communities across Canada. This week helps to increase awareness in the community about the different dimensions of peace such as tolerance, inclusiveness, caring and responsibility.
The YMCA of Greater Toronto is a charity connecting with and touching the lives of nearly half a million people in the GTA.
