Martin Liu knows how to make an entrance - a perfectly on time entrance.
The baby boy arrived into the world at 0.9 seconds after midnight on Thursday, Jan. 1 at North York General Hospital, making him the first baby of 2009 born in North York.
The first child born to Scarborough couple Jingning and Jianhang Liu arrived on his due date, said the proud new mom.
"I thought he was going to come earlier," Jingning said.
"On Dec. 30 I went to the hospital but they said it was not the right time. I went back the next day and stayed there. They (hospital staff) were always talking about if the baby was going to be the first born (in the new year) but they were not sure."
Liu said her seven-pound, three-ounce son is a mix of herself and her husband - his chin and nose inherited from Dad - and already has quite the appetite.
Baby Martin might have arrived quickly after the stroke of midnight, but another newborn beat him to the punch to be crowned Toronto's first baby of 2009.
Nyla Adrianna Gonsalves, who was born at Toronto East General Hospital just past 12 a.m., holds the title of the New Year's baby.
The five-pound, 14-ounce baby girl was born to Scarborough parents Paul Gonsalves and Erica Dumont.
