The homicide squad continues to investigate the death of a Mississauga woman found shot in the head in a SUV on a quiet North York street Sunday night.
Police were called to Talwood Drive near Leslie Street and Lawrence Avenue for a suspicious vehicle at 11:52 p.m.
Officers from 33 Division found the lifeless body of 34-year-old Evelyn Alfaro Mendez in the driver’s seat of the Ford SUV.
“The vehicle was still running,” Const. Tony Vella said. “She was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Police said Mendez was last seen by her family at about 7:30 p.m.
The SUV was first spotted on Talwood two hours later. Some residents told police they heard multiple gunshots.
A woman who has been living in the area since November 1957 said the neighbourhood is safe.
“The neighbours are all wonderful,” she said. This is extremely sad, but it could happen anywhere in Toronto.”
In March 2005, 24-year-old Iani Gusita fatally shot Ioan Corin Baicu, 32, while they were in a car in the driveway of a house at 58 Talwood.
Gusita then entered the home and fatally shot himself in the head. Mendez is the city’s second murder victim of 2009.
Anyone with information is asked to call the homicide squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
