Talks continue at York U.

Negotiations continued Monday since talks resumed this past weekend between the York University administration and the union, representing contract faculty, teaching assistants and graduate assistants.

Nearly 3,400 members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 3903 have been on strike since Nov. 6, effectively shutting down the campus and cancelling classes for 50,000 undergraduates.

As of late Monday afternoon, both sides were still meeting with the provincial mediator, discussing how to reach a tentative settlement. Key issues include wage increases and job security for contract faculty.

The university released a statement, declining to comment on the progress of negotiations while they are taking place.

“It is not helpful to the negotiations process for details of the ongoing discussions to be published while the two parties are at the table,” the university stated. ”Secondly, contrary to recent media reports, any resumption of classes is governed by the university senate and classes cannot resume until after a tentative settlement has been ratified by the Union’s general membership.”

Meanwhile, some undergraduate and graduate York students resumed their sit-in protest Sunday evening outside York University president Mamdouh Shoukri’s office.

The group of students are demanding that Shoukri agrees to participate in a public forum to discuss and answer questions about the CUPE 3903 strike.
