The following tips for men are courtesy of Mark Salgado of the House of Salgado in downtown Toronto.

* Try to buy clothes that are made in all-season weight, which translates into all-season fabric. Eight-ounce fabrics are more versatile and can be worn through more seasons.

* Consider where you are going. If you're attending a formal event, you wouldn't wear the same thing to the office or at an evening out with friends.

* To achieve variety in your shirts, try playing with details such as stitching, unique buttons or monogrammed cuffs.

* A man's wardrobes should be built on classic pieces and the addition of trendier or newer pieces every so often. However, once your size changes, so does the fit so you should go back for a new fitting.

* Subtle changes go a long way. Don't be shy, step out of your comfort zone. Play with colours, details and always try new things to keep your wardrobe fresh.

* Mix it up a little. If you have nothing but French cuffs in your wardrobe, try a few button downs. If you only have plains, add some stripes.

* For every suit, if you have three shirts, three ties and three pairs of pants you have several looks.

* Natural fibre clothing, like pieces made from cotton or wool, always exude quality in any piece of clothing.

* Play with different fabrics, textures and colours.

* One suit goes a long way. Wear the suit jacket with khakis or jeans and the look is more casual or wear the pants with a casual shirt. Versatility is key.

* When you purchase a suit, don't forget the vest. Vests can be worn more formally or casually depending on the need. Vests are great because when the jacket is taken off, men will still have a polished and put together look.

* Try to build your wardrobe for a five-day work week - Monday to Friday. This way you won't burn out your suits. Rotate your wardrobe and your clothes will last longer.

* If a man has a wardrobe with a balanced combination of classic pieces and trendier items that fit well, it's easier to mix-and-match and take a look from casual to formal wear with a few quick changes.

* Don't be afraid to accessorize. Use hats, ties, belts, shoes or scarves to achieve an individual look.

* Ask for help. It's the best way to get the specific look and fit you want.
