Talk about a speedy delivery: a baby boy was born on the side of the Don Valley Parkway in North York during the morning rush hour Thursday, June 26.

The action happened near Wynford Drive at about 8:15 a.m.

With an EMS dispatcher lending support by phone, the infant was delivered by his father, Vulpien Nzopfabarushe. The dad, who has five other sons, removed the umbilical cord from around the baby's neck and wrapped him in a blanket.

"The father called 911, and the emergency medical dispatcher gave him instructions on how to deliver the baby," EMS spokesperson Lyla Miller said. "A lot of the instructions are actually what to do after the baby is born in terms of the importance of keeping the baby and the mother warm and what to do with the umbilical cord."

Paramedics arrived shortly after the birth and took the baby and mother, Debbie McDonald, to Toronto East General Hospital.

Both are doing well, a hospital spokesperson said.

Miller said the dispatcher who took the call will be getting a stork pin.

"It's an exciting day in the career of a dispatcher or paramedic when they're involved in delivering a baby," she said. "It's one of the better types of calls that dispatchers get."

Toronto EMS workers are involved in delivering about 60 babies a year.
