Downsview Park neighbour not impressed with concert venue

After successfully holding large-scale events at Downsview Park with tens of thousands of people attending, it's no surprise that the national urban oasis located centrally within the city is becoming the ideal venue for more upcoming shows.

Edgefest recently wrapped up on July 12 with about 17,500 rock fans attending the full-day music festival headlined by such popular bands as Linkin Park and Stone Temple Pilots.

The Rhinestone Country Music Fest and Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival are two more upcoming music festivals being held at Downsview Park in August.

But Arthur Kruger, who lives near the park between Wilson Heights Boulevard and Bathurst Street, isn't looking forward to any more rock concerts.

"I feel I attended that concert," said Kruger, noting he heard all the amplified music clearly from inside his home. "I see there are two more concerts are scheduled for August and I don't want to attend them."

While Kruger, an eight-year resident, doesn't claim to represent his entire neighbourhood, he said that as part of the community he should have a say in how the park should be used.

"The park is there to serve everybody and I assume we're included in everybody," said Kruger, questioning whether Downsview Park is an appropriate venue for rock concerts. "Our view should be taken into account."

Meline Beach, Downsview Park's director of public affairs and communications, responded that they want the park to engage the public as best as possible.

"A park is not a park without people," said Beach, noting Downsview Park is also used for such events as tree planting, yoga and other sports and recreation activities to cater to as many people as possible. "And Edgefest appealed to a certain demographic."

For such concerts, she noted that Downsview Park staff works with concert promoters and bands to abide by city bylaws, which include having the last musical act finish by 11 p.m.

As for any feedback received from community residents, Beach said Downsview Park responds to each request on an individual basis.
