Emergency a reminder to be prepared

Re: 'Blast shakes North York,' News, Aug. 13.

This incident shows us that it is a good idea to put together a simple checklist of things to take with us in the event of an emergency.

We can sit at leisure now and prepare for the worst (although always hoping for the best), stick a list on the fridge or somewhere handy and add to it when you think of something new.

Medications, clothes, pets and food, important documents and so on can be listed along with where to grab the bags to throw them into.

I think it would be overkill to have a bag packed and ready to go right away, but a checklist would make things simpler in the heat of the moment when we panic and can't remember anything.

In 10 minutes, bags can be filled and thrown in a car or evacuation bus. We, in Scarborough, live close to railways, highways and industrial areas. Take a few minutes with your loved ones to put together a list and, gods forbid, if an emergency situation ever happens, we will be one step closer to being prepared.
